Ophthalmology
Pediatric ophthalmologists at Children's National Specialists of Virginia specialize in the treatment of complex pediatric eye problems. They team provides the full scope of eye care services to children from infancy through adolescence.
Services provided include comprehensive ophthalmologic evaluations for children including:
- an initial eye examination to determine the cause of poor vision
- appraisal of misalignment of the eyes in children and adults (strabismus)
- screening for ocular pathology associated with systemic diseases
- assessment of ophthalmic problems that may be related to learning difficulties
The ophthalmology team has the advanced training to deal with the eye problems of children, which differ from those of adults. Some conditions, such as amblyopia, develop only in children. Others, such as crossing of the eyes and other ocular misalignments (strabismus), are more common in children than in adults. Eye diseases, such as cataracts and glaucoma present differently in children than in adults: their pathophysiology, management and prognosis are different. To diagnose and treat these conditions and others with success, children often need the unique skills of pediatric ophthalmologists.
Special services include contact lens fitting, electroretinography (ERG), fundus photography and fluorescein angiography, A-scan biometry, B-scan ultrasonography, keratometry, pachymetry, preferential looking (Teller) visual acuity assessment, visual field perimetry and ocular coherence tomography (OCT).
